I got to thinking about rainbows the other day and it was as if the Lord spoke to me clearly. Rainbows are a symbol of God’s promise to Noah never to destroy the earth again with a flood and are more generally thought of as symbolising God’s promises.
God’s promises are revealed when the Word and the Spirit come into conjunction and the hearer is correctly positioned, then a “Rhema” word is revealed. A Rhema word is The word of God revealed by the Spirit of God for a decisive moment, it often carries power to bring breakthrough and change. (there are many, many theologians who will explain this way better than me; Wikipedia definition).
Rainbows form when the sun (or light source) and water droplets (which acts like prisms) come into conjunction and the viewer is correctly positioned to see the rainbow i.e. directly opposite the sun, so you have to be looking into the light to see it.
So what’s the parallel? Well, the light of the wold is Jesus Christ (The Word of God); The Spirit of God is very often symbolised by water. Maybe rainbows are another way for God to remind us that Spirit and Word equal the fulfilment of promises. Jesus is also know as “The Truth” so it might also be that the beauty of rainbows are a reminder of worshipping in Spirit and in Truth and that this also brings promises to fruition…
Maybe the rainbows are always there, the rain just reveals them. God’s Spirit has a promise for every human being. Beauty, like light, is always present, but not always visible, it takes additional elements, water in this case, to reveal the glorious multiple colours and facets of the beauty of light. The same goes for God, it takes the Spirit of God to reveal His glorious multifaceted beauty, and nature, manifested in Christ Jesus, His Word.
Thanks for the info: Wikipedia: A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured circular arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.
