I have often been listening to someone speak, or preach or just had a conversation and thought “hang on, there’s something not quite right here”. The person has said something, maybe benign enough, but it has disturbed my spirit. It’s as though the Holy Spirit in me says “don’t make agreement with or ingest that bit”. It’s not necessarily that the whole conversation or speech is bad, or even that the bit I need to reject is no good, it’s just that I don’t need to encumber my “digestive system” with it right now.
I call this to my spiritual digestive system. It basically functions in the same way as a natural digestive system. For example if I eat bad foods I will eventually become sick even though my body will naturally filter and excrete some of them.
If I eat too much fat and sugar I will become fat and lose some of my mobility, put excessive strain on my bones and joints, become tired and drowsy, my digestion will take up much of my energy.
If I eat too much of the same thing it will make me eventually nauseous and I will reject it.
If I eat food that contains toxins my body will reject them.
The Holy Spirit helps me digest, He helps me contain and manage my appetite and nudges me as to when I should be eating something or restraining from it.
Spiritual food comes in many forms, for example:TV, music, conversations, visions, nature, experiences, art and reading are all spiritual foods.
Spiritually we eat with our ears and eyes, hence the verse that says “give them ears to hear and eyes to see” God wants us to be fed well with the things He gives us to eat!
Reject the “food of the world” and feed yourself on His written word, what His Spirit is saying to you today and what He directs you to eat. This can include movies, music, conversations, art, visions or experiences, God speaks in many ways, be open to hearing Him in all things all the time. God is a talker, and He is always speaking good things over you, not one of His thoughts, plans or intentions for you was or ever will be bad!
