Fear’s secret superpower

Simply put, the super power of fear is the power to blind. Here’s why.

It’s a given that it is easier to beat a blind enemy than one with 20/20 vision. Any military corps worth it’s salt knows that. Army’s around the world spend billions and work hard to use stealth to camouflage their movements or when that’s is not possible they will attempt to either blind their enemies or to render their radars or other detection equipments inoperable.

Spiritually things work in a very similar way. If the enemy can either obscure the picture or blind you completely, he gains an advantage. This is where fear comes in.
It blinds you so you can’t see God’s goodness, His willingness and His ability to change things.
It blinds you from seeing your destiny and God’s ability to lead you into it.
It blinds faith so you walk around in the darkness induced by lies instead of the light induced by truth that God is good and all powerful.

When Israel reached the Jordan and were about to cross over into the promised land they saw the giants and were blinded by fear. They failed to see God’s ability to help them overcome, even though God had made it clear through his word that He had already given them the victory. Joshua and Caleb were not blinded because they believed God’s word (The Light), goodness, willingness and ability.
The work of fear was so powerful in that generation of Israelites that it actually shut the battle down before it began!

Bill Johnson once said that fear is the enemy’s scout. He sends fear in before the battle to blind and discourage the army (from a military/intelligence point of view this would be akin to disinformation). Fear will use any number of lies but here are some of it’s favourites:
– You are alone
– The struggle will never end.
– It’s a hopeless situation.
– It will never change.
– You’re worthless.
– You’re useless.
– God has abandonned you.
– You have no power or authority.
– The problem is soooooo big.
– God will do nothing.
– You’re too weak, too young, too old, too fat, too thin, too poor, too rich, too stupid.
– You have no gifts, you’re untalented, you’re boring, you’re irrelevant etc etc.
The list goes on and on, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies!

Now let’s take a look at YOUR super powers!

  1. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)
  2. God’s plans are to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
  3. God will never leave you or forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:8)
  4. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27)But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (Galatians 3:27-28)
  5. You have the power to “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons”. (Matthew 10:8).

Verses are great but it’s important to remember that the bible’s purpose is to point us towards relashionship with the author, Jesus Christ, and therein lies the real super power. Jesus is King Of Kings and Lord Of Lords, He has complete dominion, power and authority over both heaven and earth. What He says goes, when we submit to His word we are effectively putting ourselves under His protection, authority and power and He empowers us to do the same works that He did, fearlessly.

Redefining reality

God’s word is absolute truth. If God were to say “humans can now fly”, the laws of physics would have to rewrite themselve to submit to his word and bring about the reality that God had just spoken. The same goes for the authority that God has given us, when we speak within our realm of God-given authority, natural laws have to make changes for His word to come to pass. That makes the impossible possible.
